Tell us a little bit about yourself:
hello! my name is sandra, and i live in a little wartime town beside the vancouver international airport in bc, canada. my gentleman and i were married almost 5 years ago. our cat is a lovable hell-beast. i recently quit my dayjob to start a career as an independent seamstress, and i couldn't be happier! i love gardening, reading, writing, and playing strategic board and card games. i listen to a perplexing variety of music. i also collect teacups.
What is your craft? How long have you been doing it?
i've always loved crafting and creating, in general, but sewing is my definitely my passion! i've been sewing since i was little; mum encouraged and taught me the basics, allowing me to play endlessly with her magical stash of scrap fabric. i started out by making doll clothes [who didn't?] but when i got older, i started making clothes for myself. soon, i was being hired by friends and family.. doing everything from hemming pants to designing and creating elaborate wedding gowns! back in february, i quit my job after nearly a decade in the custom picture framing business. i've been sewing full-time ever since, and i LOVE it! spatterdashes and other small accessories are the mainstays of my online business, but i take on larger and more complicated projects, such as corsetry and dressmaking, locally.
How are you inspired by a Victorian aesthetic?
originally, i approached this aesthetic via the gothic subculture; i was most drawn to outfits incorporating bustle gowns, granny boots, and frock coats; naturally, i developed an interest in the mourning costumes and customs of the late nineteenth century. goth sensibilities could also be blamed for my obsession with corsetry. corsets are my main area of personal study, and i admire the beauty and complexity of natural form, high victorian, and edwardian foundation garments. setting aside the fashion aspect of victorian era, i'm fascinated and inspired by its tea culture, and by the secret languages people used - colours, flowers, fan etiquette..
