Mantle Challenge!

These past few days of rain have been tough. The dog is bouncing off the walls, the cats are ornery, the plants are wet, and I am going a little stir-crazy myself. I've been trying to channel some of my energy into working on my blog and Etsy, but it has involved a lot of sitting on the couch and staring at our mantle.

All the apartments in our building have a non-working fireplace and a mantle. Ours is in a pretty sorry state. Long after it was working someone decided to re-brick it with those cement style bricks from the 70s. And whoever painted last in here wasn't very diligent about clean-up, so the wood is dappled with white and yellow paint splatter.

In any case, it's a mantle. And there is a lot of potential for it to be an interesting and pleasing focal point for the room. But right now it's being waaaaay underutilized as a catch-all for our knick-knacks and unruly candle collection.

Highlights of our mantle include: two crooked photos hung above it (by yours truly), too many Yankee Candles, our wedding silhouettes, leftover wedding centerpieces, two kissing balls, a Venetian mask thatreallykindofcreepsmeoutbutIamagoodwifesoIletitstay, those little ceramic animals that come in the tea boxes, and some bird statuettes.

Yeah. It's a mess.

So I'm giving myself a challenge. Two weeks to clean it up and turn it into something I'm proud to have in our living room.
Will you join me? Even if you don't have a mantle, just pick one little area of your home that you've been neglecting and want to clean up and make special. Let me know in the comments and report back here in two weeks to see how we all did!

Oooh, what a great idea!! I don't have a mantle but I have tooooons of other places that need this. I'll pick the top of my fridge. There's a bunch of cluttered decorative stuff sitting up there not doing any good! Thanks for the motivation!

Good luck! Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

My word verification this time is "roses":)

Thanks guys!
April I can't wait to hear how it goes! I'm lucky I can't see over the top of our fridge because I have a feeling it's atrocious up there...

I love this idea! Do you have any sources of inspiration? I'll have to think about which corner of our place I'd like to gussy up...

My mantle could definitely use some sprucing up!! My husband keeps telling me I should use some stuff from my shop until it sells!! :)

I'm always interested to see what people do with their mantles. We don't have one, so maybe it's wishful thinking? Good luck!

Neat mantle! I can't wait to see how you update it. I don't have one, but I have been meaning to organize my fairy stand for ages so maybe this challenge will motivate me.

Awesome! I'd love to revamp my entire apartment. We moved here a few months ago and everything is still bare!

I can't wait to see what you do with your space.

Ok, this is perfect timing! We just repainted our living room and I've been staring at the fireplace & mantle area thinking it needs some updates. I have a few ideas but just haven't done anything with them yet. Count me in!

Becky - I think that's a great idea to show off some of your shop items until they sell - you have such a great variety of cool things :)

I don't have any inspiration per se, just lots of etsy goodies I've been drooling over!
